Soil Compaction

Want to hear some thoughts from others

Was doing a grub check (been a few sightings after rain and watering for the first time ever on this lawn) and while I was at it thought I’d check the soil compaction and roots etc.

This FF lawn has roots roughly 90-100mm deep, and going through the soil below that there wasn’t much beyond that. My thoughts are that seems rather shallow for a lawn that’s now going into season 5. Water gets down and no issues with drainage.

Looking at the ‘soil’ it’s rather clumpy and compacted. I did core aeration earlier this year but the plugs didn’t go much further than 50mm which I expected.

Edit: did have a thought to sod cut the top, roll lawn off soil, use powered rotary hoe to mix sand into soil bonus to that is I can remove stones that I know sit underneath in spots. This is admin but would 100% do it.

How do you get deeper into the soil profile?
What can you see with looking at the soil?
What could NZLA Aerate do to help?

Any other thoughts and insights are helpful!

Cheers 🫶🏼
