How to remove fine fescue from a new ryegrass lawn and overseed with NZLA Dark Rye
Evening! Just want to pick peoples brains. As stated in a previous post, I accidentally put down a lawn seed mix with fine fescue and perennial rye. Ultimately, I want one cultivar throughout. As you can see it is very patchy and thin in places. I bought a bag of NZLA dark rye and am wondering whether I spray the lawn with Etho (to kill weeds and fescue) and throw down seed to eventually outcompete the perennial rye or just leave the lawn as is and do the switch next spring? Lawn is about 6-7 weeks old and I have only mown it once
And on another note, I bought the NZLA starter kit amd was wondering when I could/should start using this? Thanks everyone!
I’d go ahead and put down your NZLA Dark Rye seed and apply Etho at the time of seeding. Etho will provide some pre-emergent control while also gradually knocking out the existing fine fescue. You can then follow up with a second application of Etho around two weeks later to continue targeting any remaining fine fescue. Unlike Meso, Etho doesn’t require the same waiting period between applications, and it’s generally well tolerated by newly germinated ryegrass.
Also since the existing lawn is 7 weeks old now I would use some Meso at the time of seeding too, will help with broadleaf germination. Have a read up on the NZLA site the product description is pretty detailed.
@Garry B thanks for the information there Garry, will get on to it in the weekend!
@Garry B Hi Garry just a follow up question I’m about to overseed my established lawn with Dark Rye do you apply the MESO and water it in let it dry then spread the grass seed / Starter granules then water again or the other way around if doing on the same day or doesn’t it matter? Would assume you do the overseeding then the Meso so you only water in once?
@Tracy Dunn seed then apply and water it in.
