Best grass seed and topsoil for a new lawn in Rangiora
Hi All… I have recently purchased a new build in Rangiora that was hydroseeded. Needless to say, it was a bit of a failure. This was done by the builder, but I think it was done when it was too cold, and some heavy rain might have messed it up.
I am starting over… In Auckland I used ETF reasonably successfully. The seed selector suggests Dark Perennial Rye or ETF.
What are your thoughts? I am thinking the Rye or maybe a blend of both. Will ETF and the Rye colours blend well?
Based on the prep in the images how much new topsoil would you go with, I am thinking 15mm.
Who is the best topsoil supplier and what should I use… I am not sure how much clay is in the soil in Bellgrove as I am still between Auckland and Rangiora.
Any help will be appreciated.
PS… The pics are taken from the North looking South to give an idea of how much sun the lawn will get.
Don't blend seeds I did this and it was the worst decision, we ended up redoing the lawn. Stick with one type from the NZLA range, I guess there's a reason they don't sell blends. Have you seen this tool? It's super helpful.

@Toni Fitzgerald Yep, thanks... I used the seed finder, it suggested Dark Perennial Rye or ETF depending on how much water I can give it in summer. I guess I was hoping for the best of both worlds :)
@Rob Cawood I don’t think blending the two is the best idea. Of the people I know who have blended them, most have eventually reverted back to one or the other.
I feel like if your putting ETF in there just go full ETF as it’s going to be the one most noticeable anyway.
For Canterbury, Dark Rye or MDR would be my first choice, although that shade looks potentially problematic.
Hi Johnny... The pic attached shows the section, with north at the top. The previous pic was in the morning... do you recon ETF fort Dark Rye?
@Rob Cawood You’re going to struggle with rye out the front. I think along the side of the house will be fine though. I’ve just compared it to mine and the aspect is pretty similar, and my rye does fine there.
@Jonny Hicks Hi Johnny... I am going to be down in Rangiora this weekend to try and start the lawn. I am getting 3 cubes of lawn mix, which should give me about 15mm of topdress.
When do I spray Meso and Etho? Do I spray it after doing the top dress or before? Then how long do I need to wait before sowing the seed? PS I bought 10Kgs of NZLA Dark Perennial Rye and a Starter Pack.
Also, when do I spray the starter fert and but down the grannuals?
If I struggle with the Rye in the front then I will overseed the front with ETF and hope for the best.
PS... I have seen lots of guides on renovations but not really any for starting a new lawn. If there is one can you point me to it please.
Thanks in advance.
Rob
