Sedges in shady areas – what should I do before winter?

Whats the vibe on sedges going into winter? Kill them, mow them out? growing in shady areas.

On sedges going into winter, the best move is to hold off on chemical control for now. NZLA SedgePro needs the plant actively growing to work. The herbicide moves through the leaf and into the plant, and when growth slows heading into winter you won't get the uptake you need. An application in spring when growth fires back up will get you a much better result. You won't mow them out either. You'll just be mowing the tops off. They will regrow.

The reason it's not effective in winter comes down to how the product works. SedgePro is absorbed through the leaf and then moves through the plant's vascular system down to the roots underground. When the plant is dormant or close to it, that movement slows right down. The plant isn't actively growing so the herbicide doesn't travel where it needs to go. You might get some leaf burn but you're not getting to the source, which is why it comes back.
