Pre-germinating grass seed: how to fill thin lawn areas faster
Just started pre-germinating some seed this morning to fill a few thin areas on my front lawn.
This is fine fescue, so I know I’m right on the tail end of soil temps especially in Christchurch. Instead of relying on slower germination outside, I’ll get it going in the garage first.
All I’ve done is mix some seed into a bucket with a bit of damp top-dressing mix. The key is keeping it consistently moist, not soaking, and checking it daily. There’s a pretty small window where it’s perfect, leave it too long and it turns into a tangled mess.
What you’re looking for are the first little white shoots (radicles) just starting to pop out of the seed. They start as tiny little hairs about a 1-2mm long. As soon as I see that, I’ll spread it straight onto the thin areas.
As soon as you see those radicles spread it on the lawn. I once seen they were ready before work and by the time I got home it was too far gone to spread and get a decent result. If you get to right it’s very fast to have inch long seedlings in the patches.
From there, I’ll just run irrigation 3 times a day for 2–3 days to get it established. Once it’s rooted in, you can back the watering right off.
Big advantage with doing it this way is you’re not keeping the whole lawn constantly wet for 1–2 weeks, which is what fine fescue seed would normally need this time of the year. That reduces the risk of fungal issues and just makes the whole process quicker and easier.
If you have a few patches doing this in a wheel barrow is easier as you can use a spade to turn it and make sure it’s all staying damp. You’ll need to add a bit of water every couple of days.
Thought I’d share, might help a few people!
Very interesting- thanks for sharing.
This is super helpful thx Jonny. I’m going to make a start today as I have a few patches to sort
Wow that all happened so quick! It was only 4 days since I mixed up a batch of ETF, I’ve watered a couple of times and checked this morning to see I had radicles up to 1cm so hopefully I haven’t missed the window. I’ve spread out on my patches and will watch with interest!
@Tessa Larsen Once you’ve spread it on the lawn, keep the surface damp for a few days. A light irrigation 2–3 times a day is usually enough, just a couple of minutes each time to keep moisture in that top layer where the seed is sitting.
Once it’s taken and you’ve got seedlings around an inch long, you can start backing off the watering and transition toward deeper, less frequent irrigation.
@Jonny Hicks it’s the perfect day of drizzly rain in Auckland and expecting the same tomorrow with hopefully a little sunshine. If this works you really need to promote it more! Perfect for poa / summer grasses we have pulled out and replaced with seed. I’ll keep u posted!
When you refer to top dressing mix what do you mean?
