When is Liquid Starter safe on a new lawn?
Hey team, I did a new lawn using MDR, I put the seed down about 5 weeks ago. I have just put down my second application of starter granular and was going to apply some liquid starter tomorrow.
I know on the nzla site it says liquid starter can be used after the second tiller appears on the plant at about 2 weeks post germination, but I am curious what happens to grass that has not got its second tiller or has only just germinated if they get liquid starter applied to them?
The reason I ask is because about 20-30% of my lawn is grass that still only has one strand and some of it is barely a few mm high.
I don’t mind if the liquid simply does not work on these plants as there is not enough surface area for them to absorb the liquid, as the rest of the lawn will benefit from the application, but I don’t want to apply it off or will burn or harm the recently germinated seeds.
You’ll risk burning the seedlings if you don’t follow the advice on the website, the new seedling may not cope with the Nitrogen in the product being applied to them when they’re immature and not developed. If you are going to just give it a go I’d recommend starting at half rate. You can always apply more if required. Judging by that photo I’d get stuck in with a low rate brew.
