Start your lawn wetting agents early 👌

Hey all, I thought I’d make a bit of an informative post based on my own experience with wetting agents.

I don’t know whether you’re someone who follows the application guide religiously or you’re more of a “wing it” type, but if you’ve never tried getting your wetting agent applications started this early in the season, give it a go this year.

I’m putting my first wetting agent application down tomorrow morning, and from here I’ll apply it monthly right through until around March.

One of the reasons I like starting early is that we’ve already got good moisture throughout the soil profile coming out of winter. Rather than waiting until the soil has dried down and hydrophobic conditions have developed, you’re getting your wetting agent programme established while the profile is already moist and that products spreads evenly through the profile.

There’s an old saying in the turf industry that prevention is better than cure when it comes to hydrophobic soil, and it’s something I’ve definitely found to be true.

Once soil becomes hydrophobic and starts drying out, it becomes increasingly difficult to re-wet evenly. Wetting agents can absolutely help correct it, but generally the further you allow the soil to dry and become water repellent, the harder the job becomes.

For me, starting early and maintaining monthly applications through the warmer months makes a noticeable difference when December and January roll around. Rather than waiting until dry patches start appearing, you’re getting ahead of the problem while there’s still plenty of moisture in the profile.

So if you normally wait until summer before reaching for a wetting agent, try getting started earlier this year and see how you get on 👍
