Can you mix NZLA Dark Perennial Ryegrass and ETF?
Just finished home Reno so now need lawn Reno.
In Auckland – have killed off existing lawn and plan is to scarify, aerate, top dress over long weekend. Think longer term the 4 different lawn areas I’ve got will all be best suited to ETF but soil temps at bottom of ETF range after last few days.
Will be using frost cloth but what are thoughts on a 50/50 blend of dark rye and ETF to hedge my bets on establishing some lawn over winter and then overseed with ETF only in spring? Can the ETF outmuscle the rye later?
Also killing off existing kikuyu so whatever I do is not guarantee of anything but potentially just accepting a kikuyu lawn long-term.
I've seen Jonny mention not to blend them 50:50 as the ryegrass clumps together and forms patches. You need to do ETF 70:30.
@Toni Fitzgerald - great - thanks, hadn’t seen that one. Prob reflects what I experienced with a test run of 50/50 blend 3 years ago.
Can you stick to one type? Is it due to wanting something down now before the season ends?
@KM Yeah - want to get something down but nervous on return on effort from ETF since temps dropped this week.
I'd stick with one, how bad is your OCD? The different size grass blades would annoy me. If you do though, as mentioned above go for a 70/30 mix.
@Jonny Hicks Thanks Jonny - think poor strike would trigger me more than blade size. If I started with 70/30 do you think after a couple seasons of ETF overseeds in the following spring & autumn the ETF would outcompete the rye?
@Lauchie Campbell nah, it probably wouldn’t out compete it completely. Although ETF is much more drought tolerant especially in Auckland so backing off the irrigation mid summer would send the rye.
