  Fine fescue requires a gentler herbicide approach because of its finer leaf texture, slower growth rate, and sensitivity during early development. When it comes to pre-emergent weed control, there are no safe options for use at the time of seeding pure fine fescue blends. Meso should not be used at seeding, as it’s known to reduce seedling density and can lead to a poor strike rate or thin, patchy establishment. However, once the lawn has been mowed twice or reached four to six weeks after germination, Meso becomes safe and effective for use as a post-emergent herbicide on fine fescue. It helps control a wide range of broadleaf weeds, and while some mild temporary bleaching can occur, this fades as the grass continues to grow strongly.

  For broadleaf weed control on established fine fescue lawns older than six months, NZLA Gold is a reliable option. Some people may caution against one of its active ingredients, but in practice, it has proven safe and effective on healthy, mature fine fescue when applied correctly. Many lawn contractors across New Zealand report no adverse effects when using it under good conditions. For commercial users, NZLA BWC is another excellent choice, offering strong broadleaf control across large or high-traffic areas.

  One of the standout advantages of fine fescue is its ability to tolerate NZLA Halo, a selective herbicide used for foreign grass control. NZLA Halo can be applied safely once the lawn is at least six months old, but using it earlier can severely damage or kill young turf. It’s also important to note that NZLA Halo has a stand-down period after use, meaning you can’t seed for at least 6-8 weeks following application. Always check product labels and the information on our website before applying or reseeding to ensure correct timing and compatibility.
