Lawn seed options: What grass handles dog urine best?
On the hunt for the best grass type to re-seed on the dog’s potty patch lawn.
As a proof of concept I threw down some cheapo grass seed to see how it grew, handled and how the doggos took to it, it’s a FF/Rye mix.
I’m on the look for these attributes going forward.
– Higher nitrogen tolerance
– Quicker regeneration
I’ve been thinking about RSR Rye or a Tall Fescue.
Just want to hear some other thoughts
Cheers all 🫶🏼
Fine fescue is probably your only real option there given the lack of sunlight. As for high nitrogen tolerance, I’d be asking why? Why do you want to push growth in an area where the grass is already going to struggling? Excessive nitrogen will encourage soft growth that the turf can’t properly support in those conditions, leaving you constantly chasing disease, stress, and other issues as a result. I’d focus on keeping the turf healthy rather than trying to force growth. Keen to understand your thought process here.
@Garry B sorry I should read it properly. High nitrogen for the dog piss 🤦♂️ there really isn’t any grass that will cope with excessive nitrogen for dog urine, they all burn.
Yea that’s always been my general consensus with the burning, unavoidable. But wanted to know what has a ‘higher’ tolerance to it/repairs quicker should it burn through.
The space is fully irrigated and the Rye has done the best over FF, so maybe RSR for its stronger rooting?
@Zac Wells I'd be leaning towards ETF mate, while it's also prone to getting burnt from dog urine it will be marginally better than the others. It will also work with the limited sun it looks like that area will get.
Cheers Jonny. Time to dig deeper into ETF
