NZLA Penetrate is a soil penetrant, designed to move water off the surface and drive it down through the profile quickly. It helps break surface tension so water doesn’t sit on top, speeds up dry-down, and firms the surface up. This is what you reach for when you’ve got excess moisture, pooling, or a soft, boggy lawn after rain.

NZLA Aerate is more of a soil conditioner. It works by improving soil structure, helping open up the soil so air and water can move through it more easily, which improves oxygen exchange in the root zone. This is what you want if you’re dealing with compaction, poor drainage, or heavy soil like clay that feels tight and holds water. It’s essentially helping the soil breathe better.

Both products can be used together, but they’re solving slightly different problems. I’ll often run Aerate in the tank with Penetrate since it’s such a low rate. I haven’t seen any downside to regular use, my lawn stays firm even after a decent rain.
