BioSpark – Organic Microbial Liquid Fertiliser

BioSpark is a New Zealand made liquid fertiliser that combines a solid NPK analysis with living beneficial microorganisms and mycorrhizal fungi. It feeds plants directly while also restoring the soil biology that makes nutrients available long term.

Works on vegetables, lawns, ornamentals, fruit trees, and pot plants. Apply as a soil drench or foliar spray during active growth.

*For best results from the new NZGA range, use SteadyGro as your base fertiliser across the garden, then rotate through the four liquid products weekly, applying them as either a soil drench or foliar spray.

BioSpark does two things at once. The NPK content (10% nitrogen, 1% phosphorus, 11% potassium) feeds plants directly, while the VM3 organics blend and mycorrhizal fungi (VAM) work on the soil and root system beneath. The VAM component is the standout here. Mycorrhizal fungi colonise the root mass and extend hyphae further into the soil than root hairs can reach, improving access to phosphorus and bound trace elements. On tired or depleted soils, that matters. BioSpark is chemical-free, non-toxic, and safe around people, pets, and pollinators.

Description

BioSpark is a liquid fertiliser made in New Zealand that combines direct plant nutrition with biological soil activation. Most liquid fertilisers do one or the other. This one does both.

The NPK analysis is genuinely useful: 10% nitrogen and 11% potassium put it in the range of a real top-up feed rather than a trace supplement. Alongside that, the VM3 organics blend introduces beneficial microorganisms that improve nutrient cycling and organic matter breakdown, while the VAM (Vesicular Arbuscular Mycorrhizae) gets to work on the root system directly.

VAM is a symbiotic fungi that colonises plant roots and extends its own hyphae deeper into the soil profile than root hairs can reach. It can colonise up to 80% of the root mass and helps dissolve bound phosphorus and trace elements, making them available to the plant. On compacted, depleted, or heavily chemically-managed soils where microbial activity has dropped off, reintroducing VAM can make a real difference to how efficiently plants use the nutrients already in the ground.

BioSpark works as a liquid top-up within a broader fertiliser programme, or on its own for gardeners who prefer a fully biological approach. It’s well suited to vegetable gardens, lawns, ornamentals, fruit trees, and pot plants.

How to use

Garden beds, soil drench

Mix with water and apply to moist soil during active growth. Water in well after application. Do not mix with fungicides or chlorinated water as this will damage the microbial content.

Foliar spray

Dilute and apply to foliage in the early morning or late afternoon. Good for a steady top-up between soil applications. Shake the bottle well before use.

Lawns

Apply through a watering can or sprayer. Water in afterwards. Every 3 to 4 weeks through the growing season gives the biology time to establish.

Pot plants

Apply to moist potting mix at pot-appropriate rates. Pots tend to lose beneficial biology faster than garden beds, so regular application is worthwhile.

Frequency

Every 2 to 4 weeks during active growth is recommended. Consistent use gives the microbial populations time to establish and build up, which is where the longer-term soil benefit comes from.

Application rates

Garden beds (soil drench)
50–80 mL per 10 L water, covering 10 m²

Foliar spray
50–80 mL per 10 L water

Lawns
200–300 mL per 5 L water per 100 m²

Pots & containers

Small (up to 15 cm): 3–5 mL per 1 L water
Medium (20–25 cm): 5–10 mL per 1–2 L water
Large (30–45 cm): 10–20 mL per 2–4 L water
