When would I use a Mini Prill fertiliser?
I see a few postings regarding application of mini prill and I read the info on the NZLA website it seems to be designed for more “high end” type lawns up until now I have followed the application guide and just applied All Seasons N+ this morning. Lawn is looking good but wondering if it’s beneficial to apply Mini Prill and how often? There are a lot of products not on the application guide that I see being used but not sure if it’s products I should be using alongside the guide. I’m getting quite a few really positive comments from neighbours about how great my lawn looks after winter so it’s clearly working but I’m really wanting it to look the best it can. The main purpose of a mini prill is for tight, short, cut or dense canopies. For those running perennial ryegrass with a really thick canopy, like myself, sometimes a larger All Seasons prill can sit up in the canopy rather than making its way down to the soil. This can potentially cause some leaf burn if it isn’t watered in properly.
That’s where Mini Prill really comes into its own. The prills are tiny, so they work their way through the canopy much more easily and are easier to water down to the soil.
The other advantage is coverage. Because you’re applying a much greater number of smaller prills across the same area, I find you get really even coverage, colour and overall results.
The technology within the prill is essentially the same as All Seasons N+, and the NPK analysis is very similar. The downside is that putting that technology into such a small prill comes at a cost.
So, if you don’t actually need a mini prill, I wouldn’t necessarily pay the extra for it. You’re not suddenly going to see a massive difference compared with All Seasons N+ on a lawn where the standard prill can easily reach the soil.
But Mini Prill definitely has its place, particularly on dense, lower cut lawns. Fantastic product, I absolutely love using it.

Mini Prill is a seriously good product, like crack for your lawn! Most of the mini prill ferts in NZ use sulphate of ammonia with methylene urea and it's no good unless there is decent soil temps, that NZLA one is a PCSCU mini prill so great at any time during the growing season.
