When to use Halo herbicide on fine fescue before lawn renovation
Looking for some advice on using Halo. Have fine fescue lawn which has been down 6 months. Good growth so far this spring but lots of foreign grasses. I also need to patch some areas that are thin. Should I be using halo first before I do any renovation or is the lawn too young.
Go to the Halo product page on the NZLA website. Next to the product description, there’s a full FAQ section that covers all of these questions. I would treat the lawn now, as it’s an ideal time to apply Halo. You will need to wait before doing any patch repairs, but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as fine fescue needs warmer soil temperatures than we’re currently getting anyway.

Only use NZLA Halo on 100 percent fine fescue lawns that are at least six months old. Application to mixed or immature turf can cause injury or death to fine fescue plants.
After treatment, wait six to eight weeks before sowing new seed or overseeding. While some users reseed earlier, NZLA recommends waiting the full eight weeks to prevent poor germination and seedling damage.
@KJ also treat the whole lawn and don’t spot spray that product as it’s very easy to apply too much. Don’t apply more than 15ml per 100m2
@KJ thanks. I had read that but wasn’t sure how hard and fast the at least 6 months old was. Mines bang on six months so I’ll give it a go
@Tom Wilkinson Six months is definitely on the safe side, you’ll be fine. I’ve used it as early as four months.
The annoying part is the stand-down period afterwards before you can sow new seed. KJ is on the money though, we’re still a while off ideal fescue sowing conditions anyway.
