Is it too late to scarify, aerate and reseed ryegrass lawn in Whangārei in April?
I want to scarify, aerate and reseed the lawn… Is it too late now given the unpredictable weather and time of year? I live in Whangarei. Its Rye with the dreaded kikuyu in it .
Nah, it's not too late, especially being in Whangarei where the soil stays warmer longer than most parts of NZ. April can actually be a pretty good time to do it, as long as you get onto it soon. There’s usually still enough warmth in the ground for ryegrass seed to germinate and establish.
Scarifying and aerating now is good too. Maybe just go easy on how deep you scarify to help with the existing turf recovery. Make sure you use some granular Starter fertiliser, a light topdress will help with seed to soil contact, keep the seed evenly and consistently damp while it establishes and a couple of weeks after germination, get onto some liquid fertilisers. Liquid Starter and Charger are great for an establishing (and recovering) lawn.
@Ben Wilton Thanks for the advice will get into it
