When should you apply your last granular lawn fertiliser before winter in NZ?

Hey team, have a lawn of mainly ryegrass. Mowing down to 50mm after brilliant growth. I overseeded in early March and fed with starter fert granules. Shall I give it another feed of All Seasons next month before winter?

Yes, give it a feed to see it through winter as per the application guide. Use All Seasons, not N+ as you don't want to push loads of growth.

Early May is about your cutoff for getting any real benefit from a granular feed. In the South Island some say as early as Easter weekend for last granular! Once the soil cools right down the roots just can't take nutrients up efficiently, so get it down in the next week or two to support root development and soil health before growth slows.

Standard All Seasons is a good option. At this point in the season the focus shifts to toughening the plant up for winter rather than pushing growth.

After that if you want to keep getting nutrients into the plant through winter, switch to a foliar liquid. Once the roots slow right down the plant can still absorb nutrients through the leaf itself, so foliar brews are the go to. You still don't want to pump heap of nutrients through this way though, stick to the lower label rates, pushing soft growth over the cooler months creates a great environment for fungal issues.

Have a look at our application guide for more info on timing and what to use:
