Is bird-coated lawn seed worth it? Does bird-coated grass seed work?
Other than netting, is there any effective way to keep sparrows off newly sown lawn seed? Do seed treatments actually work, or are they a waste of money?

Seed treatments do a great job of turning their poo green or red (whatever the coating colour is), so you know they’re eating it. But they also mean you’re often only getting 300–400g of actual seed in every kg you buy.
Considering birds usually only take a small percentage anyway, it’s hard to justify losing 60% of your seed weight to a coating that doesn’t really solve the problem.
Happens to me every time as well, birds all over it is annoying. In reality though, it’s never made any difference to how my lawn has turned out.
Two dollar shop reflective foil flags seem to keep them off mine. 10m long and $3 per string. Brand is ‘Bunting’. I had flocks of sparrows and since I tied flags around no issue with them.
@stef b humming tape is also fantastic but you’ll fall out with your neighbours pretty quickly, it’s also not great when there’s no wind.
Great!!
